the power of praise

It's a warm Thursday evening during another busy week, another challenging week, another week of trying to hold it all together. I'm sitting in my favorite local coffee shop and just enjoying a few moments to breathe.

I had a doctor's appointment this afternoon for one issue and walked out of the office with news about a completely different issue and was calling another doctor before I even exited the clinic. By the time I got off the phone and walked back into the office at work, I was just trying to keep the tears from falling down my cheeks.

Life can be so exhausting. We all know this, we all experience this, in a myriad of shapes and forms, fires and storms.

This afternoon I had a choice: fight the cloud hanging over my mind and heart or give into the gloom and overwhelmedness and discouragement.

I struggled for an hour or so but eventually I reminded myself that praising and trusting my God was the better answer. It is always the better answer.

Today has been another reminder to myself of the power of praise to our Lord. When I choose to shift my focus from the problems and pain, and point it towards my God and His power and love, life changes. I change. My attitude changes. My heart changes. My circumstances don't usually change but the ability to look at them from a more Biblical view changes the way I respond to them.

And it's so simple to make a couple little choices to start that heart-shift from discouragement to praise and hope in our God.

It's as simple as opening up to the book of Psalms or listening to my current favorite version of How Great Thou Art or telling the Lord that I believe and asking Him to help my unbelief.

And those simple  choices have changed my heart and my life over and over and over again.

It's not always easy and it's not always natural and it doesn't always change my heart right away. But slowly I crawl my way onward and upward towards Christ and placing my complete hope and trust in Him.

Praise God.
I will bless the Lord at all times;
    his praise shall continually be in my mouth
Psalm 34:1

giving thanks always and for everything to God the
Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
Eph. 5:20

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus for you
